Under current legislation in Spain “Any woman over 18 with full capacity to act may be a recipient or a user of the techniques covered in this Law, provided that she has given her written consent to that use in a free, conscious and explicit way. The woman may be a user or recipient of the techniques covered in this law regardless of her marital status and sexual orientation”.

Options

Thanks to assisted reproductive technologies, treatment options are varied and will depend on each case to be treated:

Options single mothers

    • Intrauterine insemination with donor semen (IUI)
    • In vitro fertilization (IVF) with donor semen.
    • Double donation, in cases where the patient does not have her own eggs.
    • Adoption of pre-embryos donated by other couples.

Frequent treatments

The most frequently applied treatment to single women is IUI. The probability of getting pregnant with this technique is exactly the same as in a sexual intercourse with a partner as long as this treatment option is considered within the woman’s childbearing age.

The selection of a suitable donor is at the discretion of the medical team applying the technique, and will seek phenotypic similarity with the recipient. Donors must undergo a rigorous selection process. According to the Law: “In applying the assisted reproductive technologies, the choice of sperm donor can only be made by the medical team that applies the technique, who must preserve the anonymity conditions of the donation …
